Tim Borsberry
Drums & Vocals
Tim was born in Helena, Montana, on May 5, 1960
(cinco de mayo). His love of music must have started at the time of his
birth. “Tim was singing
before he could talk”, says his mother, Carol. His first drum set was
pots and pans from his mother's cupboard and a set of wooden spoons.
As he recalls, “a
combo of cast iron and Mirro. I went through many sets of wooden spoons.”
At that time it was important to wear a bib with some
sort of dribbled on carrots, beets or other vibrant colors. “It really
did add to the kitchen show I was doing in the early sixties”. His first
real drum kit was a Christmas present from his parents in 1972. After
playing in several bands , Tim met Aaron Cundall (Little Elmo) in 1990,
who was playing a solo act he called " White Boy Sings the Blues". They
jammed together a bit, while Tim was playing with Thrill Hill, a local
rock and blues band. But, the friendship with Aaron remained. Tim recalls, "In
1998, I got a call from Aaron asking if I would fill in for some gigs
for Mambo Kings' then drummer Dan Nichols.” He accepted and had a great
time playing with the band as a fill-in. After some months he joined
full time.
Spring forward to 2005. After hundreds of shows later with the Mambo
Kings, Tim says, "The music keeps getting better and tighter and I find
myself able to express more and more. Plus, we really explore the wonderfully
alive music we call jazz, blues, boogie and swing.”
